PAPTEST: How reliable are Pap smears?

About a year ago, I went for my annual exam and got a pap test done. A couple days after the test, I experienced bleeding during intercourse. So I went back to the doctor. The pap came back normal and I was negative for all STDs. But my cervix bleed upon being poked. The gyn used silver nitrate to 'cautision?" my cervix due to the bleeding and sent me on my way.

The bleeding continued and my gyn basically told me I was fine and to stop worrying so I saw a different doctor. She did not perform another pap since I told her my last one came back normal. She did a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound but saw nothing wrong. That was about 6 months ago. The bleeding stopped shortly after this, but I did not have sex too often out of fear. I just went back to the new dr. for my annual again - this time my pap came back abnormal and I have signs of high risk HPV. I am going back for a colposcopy next week. Could my former Dr not have seen this on my pap? This is my first irregular pap. Last year I was convinced my pap would be abnormal due to the bleeding and it wasn't. Could I have had HPV or smthg else all this time? I know cervical cancer is curable if caught early. Now I am worried that I have had these abnormal cells for over a year and it was never caught due to negligence on the part of my doctor. The bleeding stopped but I have not had sex in about 2 months since I broke up with my boyfriend. I also got the gardisil shot when it first came out (about a 1.5 years ago) so I find it hard to believe I would have HPV.

Should I be worried? This is my first irregular pap. I do not trust my former doctor and now I am concerned that there is something wrong with me that was never caught due to negligence.
