Re: MENOPAUSE: menopause (bone loss)From: Hope Waltman (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 19 Apr 2009 12:55:37 -0500 (CDT)
Debra and Pam, If your insurance won't cover the dexascan, find a health fair that has a bone density test (sometimes free or around $10.00; it doesn't hurt and is a quick test). You can get the results immediately - if it comes back with osteopeonia/osteoporosis take that slip to your family/internist doc and he can get a dexascan scheduled/paid by the insurance policy. Also, how you take calcium pills is important - the body absorbs approx. 600 mg at a time so take the calcium pills at different times. Also, 600 mg may not be enough as you age - some docs want you to get it up to around 1,200 - 1,500 mg per day plus get milk, etc in your diet. If you have bad osteoporosis you may be given a weekly/monthly prescription pill and still required to take calcium pill with vitamin D. Walking is an important exercise to keep the bones strong. Hope this helps.
