CONTRACEPTION: Metronidazole, Fluconazole, and BC PillFrom: Elaine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 29 Mar 2009 10:52:00 -0500 (CDT)
I was prescribed metronidazole for BV and fluconazole for recurring yeast infections. I am taking Aviane-28. I finished the metronidazole on a Wednesday and took the fluconazole on a Thursday during the second week of my pill pack. I have taken these medications before on the pill and didn't get pregnant; however, I have been reading lots of information on the web that says that both of these medications decrease the pill's effectiveness. Could these medications interact with each other to decrease the effectiveness of the pill? I have called several pharmacists and my own obgyn and keep getting different responses. One pharmacist said taking the meds together can reduce the pill's effectiveness, another said that only the fluconazole would decrease the effectiveness, and my obgyn says neither one of the meds will decrease the effectiveness. I appreciate it if someone could give me some clarification on this. Thank you very much.
