HYSTERECTOMY: Hysterectomy or oophorectomy?From: Jean (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 23 Feb 2009 22:58:44 -0600 (CST)
I'm 44 years old, a DES daughter (confirmed, 2 cold cone biopsies (1993-1994) for CIN3. Almost all Pap smears/colposcopy/biopies since then ASCUS or CIN1. Recently, an ultrasound showed 2 cysts on my right ovary, most likely endometriomas, but one is solid and malignancy can't be ruled out and one is 5 cm. There were also smaller simple cysts on left ovary. Have heavy periods, and pelvic pressure/occasional pain, but not unbearable. The doctor has given me a choice of removing just the right ovary or the uterus and both ovaries. Tempted to do the total hysterectomy, since I don't want kids/cysts will likely come back/endometriosis likely/cervical issues/close to menopause anyway. Is a hysterectomy overkill in this situation?
