GYNECOLOGIC: Depo Provera issue

I am 29 years old, and I have been taking Depo Provera since I had my son eight years ago. The first three months I bled continuously until the day I received the second injection. Everything has been fine. No cramping, no bleeding or spotting until now. I have been check for STD's of course, and have no kinds of abnormalities. Except for two years ago, something strange happened, after being slim my whole life, I gained 60 pounds in three months, my doctor ran thyroid and pregnancy tests that came back negative. My GYN took me off the shot for three months, and the weight has disappeared quickly. (Within three months)I am back into my size tens. Now,... two years later, all of a sudden I have started spotting, out of the blue. It is not time for my next shot, its due in about 3 weeks or so. I am cramping now, and the spotting is the dry type (brown and gross looking like I am at the end of a menses), but there is not much of it. I was never a heavy bleeder because of being really small figured. Any idea what the issue might be? "Nothing is wrong" is becoming a little hard to swallow. Thank you for any suggestions or help that may be offered.
