PREGNANCY: 2 cm cervix at 28 weeks 0 days?From: Sara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 22 Nov 2008 00:40:40 -0600 (CST)
I am currently 28 weeks pregnant. I have been having Braxton Hicks contractions since 16 weeks. Background - 2 live children (9 & 3 years old). Severe PE & had emergency induction at 36 weeks with the first. Severe PIH with the second & emergency induction at 35 weeks 5 days. 2 miscarriages after them in Feb (13 weeks 3 days) and end of April at 5 weeks. I am seeing a peri in addition to my ob for comanaged care because of history & chronic HTN now. I told my ob's office about the BH that have been going on since 16 weeks. My ob said it was ok as long as not in a pattern, didn't hurt, & didn't last for hours. At 26 weeks they started to go into a pattern. So he told me anything longer than 2 hours I needed to call in for. They also hurt too now. I am on rest as much as possible & stay off my feet now restrictions. Today I had a peri appt & they were very concerned about the contractions as I was in L&D Wednesday night. They were irregular between 5-8pm. Then at 8 pm went to 4-5 mins apart lasting one min. I called my ob @ 9:15p. He said go to L&D & get checked out. They stopped on the way there. They put me on the monitor & they stopped. I never measured any on a monitor. They sent me home on H20, rest, off feet. The tech did a transvaginal US for cervical length. When she checked she wouldn't tell me anything & that she had to speak to my peri. Usually if everything is ok, they are happy to tell me. My cervix was closed but read 2.04 cms for length (I think). My peri came in & said everything is ok for now. She said she was not sure as they did not know where I started from. Everything I am reading shows that less than 2.5cms is a cause for concern & could be preterm labor. Also when the tech pressed on my stomach, it appeared to open on the inside (black space where the cervix line she was measuring was at and had been previously filled in). I "think" they will be doing another cervical check in 2 weeks. I am to stay off my feet & rest and drink water. 1) Is 2 cms bad for cervical length. 2) Can someone explain what they were doing & what it means. My peri didn't go into detail at all. 3) What can I expect for treatment & monitoring? I think I will be getting the cervical checks via US because the nurses said that. Will I be having to get digital checks in my ob's office too. 4) From what I get from reading this means I am 50% effaced at 28 weeks? Is this normal?
