OVARIANCYST/FIBROID: After ultrasound ob/gyn isn't sure if I have an ovarian cyst or uterine fibroid

I am 25 years old with a history of ovarian cysts. In April of 2008, after experiencing irregular periods and breakthrough bleeding for over six months, my ob/gyn recommended that I stop taking my birth control pills. The breakthrough bleeding did not stop but was never consistent. I would usually have normal discharge the week after my period but then the breakthrough bleeding would start until I had heavier bleeding, which I considered to be my normal period. After taking some pills prescribed by my ob/gyn to "reset" my period in September, I still have breakthrough bleeding. At this point, my ob/gyn does not feel that the breakthrough bleeding could have been caused by the birth control pills and recommended an ultrasound (pelvic and transvaginal) to see if I had any uterine fibroids.

When I called to get my ultrasound results this week, the nurse told me that there is "something" on the right side of my uterus but the doctor cannot tell if it is a cyst or something else. I was told to schedule a follow up ultrasound in six weeks to see if the "cyst" has resolved itself. I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion. If whatever they saw is the cause of the breakthrough bleeding I have been experiencing for almost a year, I feel like I shouldn't wait two more months to see if it goes away. I'm worried that it might be something more serious than an ovarian cyst that I should have taken care of sooner rather than later.

Any advice?
