Re: SEXUALITY: Septate HymenFrom: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 27 Sep 2008 12:18:19 -0500 (CDT)
Annie: As you know, a septate hymen usually involves a thin (or sometimes thick) band of tissue across the vaginal opening at the level of the hymen. Often it produces no problems, and in many cases women with this can have a baby pass through the vagina without difficulty. Sometimes they tear during sexual activity. Removal involves about 30-60 minutes in the OR with a few sutures. It will put you out of "action" sexually for about 4-6 weeks afterwards. In some cases, however, the repair is harder so ask your doctor what he or she thinks. A septate hymen should not affect your ability to have an orgasm. I would suggest going to the local bookstore to check out the health section. There are several books, usually under the heading "human sexuality" or similar, which will have diagrams and explanations. The clitoris is a small "bump" at the top of the genitals ("privates") that sometimes is tucked under a small hood of tissue. As always, there are a *lot* of infections out there and you can't tell by looking at someone whether he or she has one, so always practice safe sex, by using a condom. Best wishes,
