Hope Waltman's reply: Dr. William Parker, “A GYNECOLOGIST SECOND
OPINION” – book. Page 317.
"Should you consider a second opinion for the pathology results of an
endometrial biopsy or D&C?
The interpretation of abnormal cells under the microscope is not an
exact science, and differences of opinion among pathologists can exist.
Pathologists often have areas of expertise, and it is reasonable,
especially if there is any question about the findings from a D&C, to
have a second opinion from a pathologist experienced in gyn pathology.
In fact, one study found that 60 percent of biopsies originally thought
to represent hyperplasia were normal when reviewed by an expert
pathologist. Only 3 percent of these biopsies were found to represent
cancer. This is something you might discuss with your dr.
To get a second opinion, the original glass slides prepared by your dr.
lab can be sent to the 2nd lab, and no new tests or biopsies need to be
done. If a diagnosis is not clear, I may rely on a specialty
pathologist nearby or, sometimes, will even send slides to pathologists
in another area of the country for a second opinion."
