Re: HPV: DNA---UPDATE to Dr. Lyons, Jo Ann....please help...gyn oncologistFrom: William F. von Almen, II, MD, FACOG (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 25 Sep 2008 19:13:58 -0500 (CDT)
Robin OK, lets start from scratch If you have an abnormal pap, that is not obvious cancer, basically it is: ASCUS, LGSIL or HGSIL. ASCUS will have HPV typing done, the others really do not need it as you already have dysplasia which is predominately caused by HPV, and you will need a colposcopy with LGSIL and HGSIL. If you have low grade virus on the HPV typing with an ASCUS pap, nothing more needs be done except to return for a year. If you have high grade virus on the HPV typing with an ASCUS pap, you need a colposcopy. That is the basics. If you do not see any colposcopic abnormalities, and the endobrush or an endocervical curettage is normal, repeat pap in 4-6 months is appropriate...Dr. von Almen
