FIBROIDS: Hysterectomy for fibroids?

I am 53 years old, have not had a period for 5 months, and have 3 fibroids: 1 is 8 cm, 1 is 5, and 1 is 3. They were diagnosed 1 1/2 years ago, rechecked 1 year ago, and are still the same size. Once a month they become so painful, I can barely sit (sciatica type pain down the buttocks and thigh). My urogynecologist recommends a laparascopic hysterectomy, leaving the cervix and ovaries intact. She says removing the fibroids would cause heavy bleeding and would be very painful. She says the laparascopic hysterectomy would be less dangerous and less painful. Preserving fertility is not an issue.

I keep reading that 2/3 of hysterectomies in the U.S. are unnecessary and, since I am no longer having the heavy periods I used to, I have no reason but the fibroids to go through this surgery. Do you think the doctor's concerns are valid and a hysterectomy is the only way to go? Thanks.
