Re: PREGNANCY: Extreme scare with rapid heart beat when pregnant? Affects on the babies? From: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 29 Jun 2008 22:26:34 -0500 (CDT)
First, I'm glad you and your family are safe. There are several medical conditions that cause rapid heartrates, and some athletes train at a pace that elevates their heart rate, even while pregnant. In order for a rapid heart rate to affect uterine blood flow it would probably have to be sustained for a long time, and likely would be so high that you would not be able to fill the heart chambers with blood, leading to fainting. To answer your other questions, your rapid heart rate should not damage the babies' hearts or otherwise cause them harm. Finally, while nobody really knows what daily stress (such as being at war, severe grief, etc) does to a fetus, it is unlikely that the type of stress you described, while intense, would harm your babies. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is "uneventful!"
