GENERAL: ovarian cyst caused by Chantix or something else???From: rutledgec (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 23 Apr 2008 11:57:38 -0500 (CDT)
Hi. I will start with a little history. I am 29 years old, I have five children and have had two miscarriages. My last child was two years ago. I have always had normal menses, 28 days apart, on or off BCP. I never had a problem with ovarian cysts. I did learn that my sister had a problem with hemoraghic cysts. Last year, I was taking Lo Ogestrel. We decided to quit taking it so we could have another child. I also took Wellbutrin XL to quit smoking, but had to quit taking them because it was causing heart palpitations. I took Rhinocort for two months for sinus/allergy symptoms. November 2007 - quit taking BCP Cycle: 27 days since the last and 6 days long. December 2007 - no cycle. took two pregancy tests, both negative January 2008 - cycle 38 days since the last and 9 days long. Quit trying to conceive two weeks after that. No BCP, just condoms. February 2008- cycle 36 days since last and 6 days long. February 16 - started taking Chantix. February 19 - abdominal pain February 20 - Dr. office for pain, find a UTI and a ultrasound shows a cyst on left ovary. CT scan follows and I start seeing my Gyn. Dr. didn't think the cyst was caused by the Chantix. Dr. tells me to quit taking it for now, took it for only 3 days. Gyn gets my CT scan and says it is a dermoid cyst and it needs to be removed. She thinks my irregular cycles was the cause of quitting BCP and the she didn't think the Chantix caused the cyst. March 7 - LSO Laparotomy. Removed left ovary and fallopian tube along with a 7 cm dermoid cyst. March 16 - cycle 37 days since last and 6 days long. April 18 - 6 week post op check and everything looks fine. I start taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (April 21st). Cycle starts this night. Gyn says I can start taking Chantix again. I trust my doctors, but can't get over the irony of starting Chantix and then having a cyst. I am wondering if the irregular cycles was caused by the cyst or of my quitting BCP? With the chain of events does it look like I could have possibly had the cyst before started Chantix? Can a cyst cause irregular cycles? Just a extra thought or two on this would be a reassurance. One note, on last pap exam, there was no indication that a cyst was there. Thank you for your time.
