Re: CHRONICPAIN: Presacral Neurectomy (PSN) LUNAFrom: Daniel Martin, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 1 Apr 2008 15:20:29 -0500 (CDT)
Message posted on Daniel Martin, MD behalf by: Hope Waltman, Women’s Health Forum Moderator Regarding: Presacral Neurectomy (PSN) One problem you may have finding a physician is that presacral Neurectomy (PSN) was a popular operation in the 1960s and 1970s. This was a routine part, along with uterine suspension, of surgery for endometriosis. It was occasionally used as an isolated procedure in selected cases. Recent data suggests that PSN may give short term relief (6 months or less) but few patients have long term relief (more than 1 year). PSN is done at the same time as treatment of endometriosis by some physicians. PSN is not commonly done as an isolated procedure since many physicians do not think the risk of surgery justify the use of the procedure as there is little long term relief. A second problem is that the front desk may not recognize your words. Ask if they do deep endometriosis surgery, laparoscopic uterine nerve ablation (LUNA) or presacral neurectomy (PSN). Asking about endometriosis, LUNA and PSN increases the chance they will recognize what you are asking. NOTE: LUNA is almost never done as an isolated procedure. PSN is uncommonly done as an isolated procedure.
