PCOS: Continuous spotting and metformin 2000 mg

I have been spotting, some days heavy and some days light, but only maybe two days can be considered bleeding. I started taking metformin on 9-25-07, and I started spotting on 11-15. I have not stopped spotting yet. I was taking 5oo mg pills four times a day, and my doc changed it to 1000mg two times a day on 12-24-07, and I am still spotting. Nothing has changed. Any suggestions. Is this a normal side effect. I am 37 and I have two children, Son- 20 and Daughter-16. I have just recently been diagnosed with PCOS.
