Re: GYNECOLOGIC: Vaginal discharge and cervicitis

Hey, Kulala-

If cervicitis is caused by something other than gonorrhea or chlamydia, it's very unlikely to cause PID. I have never been a fan of using cryotherapy (freezing the cervix) to treat cervicitis or an ectropion (the excess cervical tissue I mentioned before), mostly because it can cause blockage of the cervical opening, called cervical stenosis, which can make it hard to become pregnant. I usually try a vaginal antibiotic, like clindamycin, before thinking about cryotherapy. I thought of one more cause after sending my prior email: a posterior cervix. I have seen several cases of cervicitis and increased mucus discharge in women who have a cervix that "points downward." This can cause the cervix to become irritated by intercourse, jogging, and bowel movements. Good luck with everything.
