Re: GYNECOLOGIC: Vaginal discharge and cervicitis

This is a very frustrating problem. There are several possible causes of this. Sometimes a condition called "cytolytic vaginitis" can cause a persistent discharge. In addition to a physical exam, pH and wet prep (looking under a microscope) there are DNA swabs that your doctor can perform that will help diagnose specific causes. If you are on the pill or some other types of birth control, the hormones can cause your cervix to change, leading to more discharge. Also, it is possible that this is just "your discharge" and is not due to a disease or infection. Some women produce more vaginal discharge as a normal physiologic process. I would suggest that you ask your doctor to leave no stone unturned. He or she should perform a careful history and exam including a wet prep and pH, and look for cervical infections (chlamydia and gonorrhea) and vaginal infections (yeast, BV, cytolytic vaginitis). Good luck and best wishes.
