CONTRACEPTION: Switching from BCPs to Copper IUD

I am 44 and beginning to experience night sweats and hot flashes, as well as stubborn weight gain. I have been on birth control pills (Ortho Novum 7-7-7 or the generic equivalent) for almost 30 years, with the exception of while I was pregnant (two children). My doctor is recommending I switch to the copper IUD, which will give me reliable birth control without hormones into menopause. However, he has no idea what will happen to my body if I stop taking birth control pills after taking them for so many years. Will it affect my hormone levels and push me further into perimenopause? What side effects can I expect from stopping birth control pills cold turkey after nearly 30 years of constant use? Thanks, Lenae
