Is it really HPV?

For years now I have had pain during penetration and for about 2 days after sex in the area just below my vaginal opening. I recently saw a 'specialist' who diagnosed me with HPV based on the skin turning whitish upon application of a vinegar-acid concoction. I have no warts (or lesions of any kind) at all in this area and I have never had an abnormal Pap (including the most recent Pap which was only two weeks before the HPV diagnosis). The area simply is painful during penetration and then for a few days after intercourse. Currently I put A&D ointment on the area and avoid sex for a while after an episode. I was given a prescription for a cream to apply once at night every other night, but good grief, the cure was worse than the disease ever has been!! I stopped using the cream after about 3 weeks of sheer torture and pain and went back to A&D and avoidance of sex. I'm curious if this diagnosis is really correct given that I don't have any other symptoms of HPV (at least according to the tons of literature I've read over the past few months). What about taking folic acid? It seems that this stuff keeps coming up in documentation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.
