GERD/Hiatus Hernia & Menstrual periodFrom: Tamara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jul 2003 07:30:33 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I suffer from severe stomach pains on the 3rd day of my period. These pains happen above the waist so I don't think they are related to uterine cramping. My stomach often feels very distended and bloated and I take Ovol because I think it is gas, but this doesn't help. The pains usually span a 24 hour period (approx) and the pains seem most severe overnight. Generally, they are so bad that I have little appetite and overnight they keep me awake. It only happens during my period. Once the pains have subsided, my insides are quite tender for about 2-3 days. My doc. diagnosed me as having GERD and possibly Hiatus hernia. What I would like to know is, have you heard of GERD/HH being affected by menstrual cycle? I don't really exhibit symptoms any other time of the month, although I have noticed a few things...I suffer from heartburn and hiccups more regularly than I used to, when I'm in the final few days of my cycle before my period starts, I'm very bloated and gassy. I also wonder if I should seek another opinion. My doc is reluctant to relate it to hormones but I can only relate this pain to my menstrual cycle as I have been charting everything for the last 2 years due to infertility. I have not been diagnosed with endo, however, I do have a couple of fibroids. Thanks.
