bacterial infection help!

I recently went to another doctor for a second opinion for a discharge problem I have been having. The doctor I had been seeing told me I had bacterial vaginosis and put me on an antibiotic which did not take care of the problem then put me on another and that also did not help. The other doctor I saw did a swab which came back negative for BV and did a culture which came back as my having a bacterial infection. I am not sexually active. This problem has been going on for about 3 months now. What exactly is a bacterial infection and how long do they take to go away? And since it has lasted so long, could there be any long-term damage? I am in no pain, there is no itching or burning, all I have is a light yellowish discharge and I normally feel wet all the time.
