Re: Impact of endometrial adhesions on colonoscopyFrom: Curious (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 31 Mar 2003 15:41:27 -0600 (CST)
You need better communication with your gastroenterologist ( I would hope a good, experienced, one). If pain is a major consideration colonoscopies can be done under general anesthesia. However, endometriosis and adhesions can both increase the risks of perforation during a colonoscopy under certain circumstances. Under normal circumstances the risk of perforation during a scope is rare. Colonoscopy is the procedure of choice to detect precancerous and cancerous conditions in the colon. However, the risks must be weighed against the benefits. I would think a thorough discussion with your gyn and with a good, experienced gastro and perhaps even between your gyn and gastro should help to better inform you and help the three of you to decide your best course of action. If narrowing or stricturing of the colon or small intestine is suspected an upper and lower barium GI series might be the way to go for more information at considerably less risk altho it is unlikely to reveal any precancerous condition.
