Birth control patch all the time

My ob/gyn has suggested taking the patch continuously. I suffer from hormone related migranes, have long heavy periods, and have been very moody before my cycle. We will soon have "permenant" birth control and the patch will not be needed for that purpose. The doctor tells me it is safe to continue on the patch for all 4 weeks. Therefore not getting my period and maybe relieving these symptoms. I can't find anything that discusses this use of the patch. I'm told that it is fine to do for years?
