Re: Colitis and SymptomsFrom: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Aug 2002 18:20:29 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, Sorry to hear you are having these symptoms. I know what it's like. I have suffered from this on and off for years. I try to keep my bowels regular, or that's when problems arise. Get plenty of fiber and water in your diet for one thing. (lots of fiber will make it worse without the water) Stress can contribute to this also. What I have found is: when I become constipated, and get somewhat backed up, the mucous lining of my intestine will start to come out around the stool...and lots of times it will be coated on the stool itself. If you have intermittent problems with diarrhea, and then constipation...it makes it worse, so working on that issue will help. For me, the blood has been an internal hemmorhoid that bleeds. If it is bright red, and not dark it is less worrisome. Your Gastro Dr will most likely want to do either a colonoscopy or a flexible sigmoidoscopy. I had the second one, which turned out just fine. It was only slightly uncomfortable, and made for lots of gas!!!!! Again, improving your diet with enough fiber, fruits and veggies, and decreasing any stress may just be helpful. Take care!
