Enlarged Endometrial Lining and Endometrial BiopsyFrom: Alan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Aug 2002 11:20:59 -0400
Pelvic ultrasound results came back abnormal (enlarged endometrial lining at the very beginning of my cycle -- have no idea how large since it wasn't shared with me). My PCP referred me to GYN who did endometrial biopsy (waiting for results). I'm 43 years old. Profuse night sweats on occasion, chronically, chronically tired and tip the scales at 102 lbs (usually 110). Periods last 7 days now, used to be 3 or 4. Otherwise, generally healthy. Family scared me into visiting my PCP after both sisters were diagnosed with ovarian cancer and lymphoma and I hadn't been to the GYN in over 10 years so PCP set me up for screening with the ultrasound. On the biopsy side, GYN says they just looking for abnormal growth and not to worry since most biopsies come back OK. What kind of abnormal growth are we talking about? What warrants a biopsy anyway? Do they perform these tests today as frequently/commonly as a blood test? Is an enlarged lining a common result in ultrasound? How large does the lining have to be to warrant a biopsy (in real doctor terms)? DO most results read normal? Is it typical for GYN to schedule follow-up appointment to discuss results of the biopsy before the test results are known? I'm looking at a waiting period of 3 weeks before I re-visit GYN for follow-up. The word biopsy alone is enough to alarm a person. When I asked my GYN questions the answer was "let's wait and see what the test results show". I'm not asking the questions to upset myself further, I'm only asking because I'd like to educate myself on the subject and be prepared no matter what the results. Single mom of 3 and just need to know more. --diana
