dermoid cyst and uterine fibroids?From: Jeannie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 31 Jul 2002 20:42:34 -0500 (CDT)
Background information-I'm 45 yrs. old with a history of endometriosis (diagnosed 12 years ago), no children. I recently saw the ob-gyn because of pelvic/lower back pain. Ultrasound indicated a dermoid cyst on the right ovary. Dr. says I also have uterine fibroids, which was surprising since I have fairly regular periods and have not experienced excessive pain or bleeding with them. A laparotomy has been scheduled to remove the dermoid and ovary, as well as the uterus due to the fibroids. What I have read about fibroids is that they usually become smaller after menopause- so is removal of the uterus really necessary? I know that the right ovary definitely needs to be removed. Removal of the left ovary is optional at this point, but dr. feels that due to the history of endo., it may be best to remove it also. I'm not sure I'm in favor of that- I'm scared of surgical menopause and wondering if I really need to have EVERYTHING removed at this point! I have a call in to the doctor to discuss further, but am looking for other input. Thanks for your help!
