Ovarian Cyst Menopausal

My sister is 50 years of age. She has had abdominal distention and chronic constipation for several years. Her periods are irregular and the flow is extremely heavy. Lately she has had severe pelvic pain. She has had 2 d and c procedures in the past year. Recently her doctor told her that she has an ovarian cyst and uterine fibroids. Her internist has diagnosed her with irritable bowel syndrome. The gynecologiost did a trans-vaginal unltrasound and said she has a one inch ovarian cyst. He prescribed progesterone to bring on a period. If the period comes, she is to see him again when it is over to check if the cyst is gone. If the cyst does not go away, or if the hormone does not induce a period, the plan is to do a laparoscopy.

My question is, given her symtoms, her age and her pain, wouldn't a laparoscopy now rather than at some indefinite point in the future be best?
