Re: *Surgery Questions*From: Joyce (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 18 May 2002 15:56:42 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Sue, I had a hysterectomy last yr,...I smoked two cigarettes before surgery that daywasn'tscheduled till 11:30am.] I also had a glass of water with the meds they gave me in pre-op! I would never do it again!!!!!!!!! I woke up choking and vomiting and couldn't breathe in! When it all calmed down[drs suctioning me, meds,....], I asked the dr what happened...I never had that reation to anesthesia~! He said [after we went over everything],you could have killed yourself! That smoking and drinking[which he had the nurse fired over the water!],make more digestive juices in the stomach. When they are produced, it can come back up in the tube they use to anesthetize you with. The fluids get into your lungs and cause you to stop breathing or pneumonia or many other complications. I did get pneumonia and couldn't smoke for two weeks afterwards! Heck, I couldn't breathe very well either! All very scary for me! If there are other reasons, I don't know them , but please take it from one who has been there....Don't Do It! And if you should choose to,...make your drs aware of it before surgery! I like breathing,...never want to be that scared again! Joyce PS...You can smoke after during one of your walks!...much better idea!
