Re: home pap smearsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSun, 31 Mar 2002 00:13:41 -0600 (CST)
What it does for me is reassure me. Almost ALL cases of cervical cancer are HPV related. I will know that if I don't carry the virus I have an EXTREMELY low chance of getting cancer. And considering the PAP is far from perfect with it's unacceptable false-positive rate, I'd rather have the HPV DNA test. >>-- >>S > >>So what does that do for you? Millions of women have HPV and a small percentage actually get cervical cancer. You would still need to have cells examined by a cytologist or pathologist;if you have cervical cancer you would still have to go to a doctor. (and if you've had cancer you'd know it's a lot more than one office visit a year)Your chance of dying from other causes is higher too, and there aren't any home tests for that.
