Billing QuestionFrom: ams (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 15 Mar 2002 23:35:56 -0600 (CST)
To physicians and/or patients who have knowledge about billing situations. I have a physician that I have been going to for several years. I have had visits at least twice a year plus biopsies done in the office at a hospital by that same physician. I was there last in June 2001. Each time I go, I pay my co-pay. Each time I have gone, I have received an explanation of benefits from my insurance company with everything listed that they paid (which has been everything). Today, I called and made my next appointment. After I hung up, I opened my mail to find a bill from that office for $15 from 1999 and $99 from 2000. Now, I am one of those people who always pays my bills, pays early and/or on time, and I would never try to get out of paying. But, shortly after I started going to this physician, several of the doctors split from the group. The group that they left had screwed up the books, billed the insurance company incorrectly, etc. I had to work hard to sort everything out. Now, I have gotten this bill. I can't see where I owe it. I don't understand how these charges are just coming up after years have gone by. How long after service can you be billed/held responsible? I noticed that twice, since they split from that other group, they were denied payment from the insurance company for not filing in a timely manner (and they never billed me at all for those visits and these charges are unrelated to that). I am tempted to call the doctor and tell her I am leaving her practice because I cannot trust her billing dept. Any advice?
