Cervical Cancer and Birth Control Pill

Since birth control pills and synthetic hormones cause problems in women who take them, why are they still prescibed today? It has been proven that women don't stop making estrogen as they age, but doctors are still prescribing estrogen especially for menopausal women. Why is this so? Why is menopause treated as a disease instead of the normal bio-fuction of the female body as she ages? Why are so many women put on HRT?
