Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine insertion / expulsion / behind the uterusFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netThu, 28 Feb 2002 11:53:44 EST
Dear doctor Our first baby was born in Sept 1999 and we have second baby in April 2001. We decided not having any baby in the near future. My OBGYN suggested me either take birth control pill or have IUD insertion. Since I was breastfeeding the newborn, she can suggest me a mini-pill, which will not affect my milk supply. She also said it is okay to have IUD insertion. After discussing with my husband, I had levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system insertion in Jun. I had my first menstrual period a week after the IUD insertion since giving birth. But I missed my period in July. It came back in early/mid Aug. At about six weeks (in early Aug), I went back to the doctor for following insertion to make sure that IUD was in the right position. Unfortunately, the doctor told me that she could not find the IUD in my uterus. She suggested me to have ultrasound to see whether the IUD was inside my body or not. Finally, she told me there was nothing inside my uterus and she was suggested that the IUD was expulsed by itself without my notice. I asked what was the reason to cause the expulsion. She said it might be because the uterus had not recovered from giving birth. She also said she did not realize I had two babies in such short period of time (they are 18-1/2 month apart) We were worry and suspected since the IUD is not very tiny at such. I should notice it if it fell out from my body. However, there is nothing we could do at that point. In Sept, I contacted the OBGYN concerning about my unusual menstrual period. It came every 2 weeks and sometimes it last for 10 days. The nurse told me that it was not uncommon because I breastfed. She also suggested me to take birth control pill, which suppose to put my system back to normal as she mentioned. I was too tried and lost too much blood when my menstrual period started. I was not able to continue to breastfeed the baby and finally I give up in Sep/Oct. Unfortunately, even I gave up breastfeeding; my menstrual period did not back to normal. It still came every two week and last for 10 days (sometimes it was very heavy). I contacted the OBGYN again in early Dec. The same nurse told me that my body got used to breastfeed and suggest me to take birth control pill again. Few days later, the doctor contacted me directly and she began to suspect the device was still inside my body and she suggested me to take x-ray at my abdomen. I went to the hospital and took the x-ray on the next day. She contacted me at that night and told me that the IUD was placed behind my uterus. I have surgery to remove the IUD few days last. She told me it was a very simple surgery. She also said I would be totally fine in the late afternoon. She said I could even go to the train ride in the museum in the evening. Unfortunately, the true was I could not go to the museum at that night and I had in bed for 5 days. I was suffering from serious shoulder pain, which she did not mention. Also, after few days, I had extremely heavy menstrual period, which the doctor did not mention before either. (I called her and she said it was what she expected) I have few questions about this whole thing: 1. Will the frequently menstrual period affect my supply of milk? 2. My breast becomes smaller than before. Will it be because of the hormones release from the IUD? Or it is other reasons? 3. Is it possible that I will lose the ability to have another baby in the future? Thank you very much for your help. Yours sincerely Kam Kilduff
