prolonged uterine bleeding

I am 27, married, and the mother of two children, ages 6 and 2. My history of prolonged unterine bleeding began 5 years ago when I went off the pill, in between trying to conceive our second child. The prolonged bleeding includes 4-5 days of spotting and/or light bleeding, and then it suddenly gets real heavy for a couple of days, and then more light bleeding/spotting until it ends. My bleeding each month lasts around 10+ days. This is becoming very aggravating! I also have mild cramping a day or two before any bleeding starts, and then bad cramping once the heavy flow begins on days 4-5. I have been this way each month for the last 5 years, with the exception of when I was pregnant and during the first 6 months after pregnancy when I had no period because of breastfeeding. I had a lap surgery in July 98 to look for endometriosis, which was not found. However, my OB did find adenomyosis and also polyps, which were removed during the surgery. I do not recall my OB saying that my bleeding problems are related to having either adenomyosis or polyps. I have talked with my OB about this many times and have not received a real clear cut answer, other than long periods may be normal for some women. But 10 or more days? I don't think so! Any information that I can approach my OB with would be helpful. I go in for my annual exam later this month. Thank you
