Adhesions vs IBSFrom: clare (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jan 2002 16:39:48 -0600 (CST)
Hi all: I have a dillema - I hope someone here can help. My gyn thought I may have adhesions or nerve problems resulting from a laparotomy in April 2000. Last October he suggested I have a diagnostic laparoscopy. I tried to live with my symptoms, hoping they'd improve or I'd get used to them. They got worse. I saw him last week to book the surgery, and as I was leaving he said, "you know, it could be bowel spasms". I've had IBS since I was a teen, it's well under control for years If this is IBS then it's severe. I don't want to have an unnecessary surgery. My current symptoms do not improve with a b.m. - if anything they are worse up to an hour afterwards. Symptoms: pain and distension, pulling downward pain at bellybutton, right sided sharp and dull pain (had right oopherectomy), nausea (no vomiting), when I sit down sometimes I get pain that shoots right up to my navel, and pain after voiding(sometimes). Most days I cannot walk upright. Exercise makes it worse (it made the IBS better) and laying down feels better. I saw a gastro dr. before the surgery in 2000 and he said I was fine. I do have times when I have only twinges and jabs of pain, but just for a couple of days at a time. When the pain is at its worst, I have loud stomach noises and flatulance, pencil thin b.m.'s and on occasion have wondered if I should go to emerg. Instead I stop eating and it improves over about 3 days. It would seem silly and a waste of valuable time to have a surgery if this is IBS. I'm just looking for any opinions. Thanks so much.
