pain, any suggestions?

Hi, I just found this forum and hope you can help me. I am 21 years old and have had vulvar pain/itching for probably 3-4 years now. I had my first pelvic exam a little over a year ago and my (family practice) doctor thought it might be a yeast infection and prescribed Diflucan -- this did nothing. My main symptoms are itching and stabbing pain around the clitoris. It usually does not extend to close to the vaginal opening, it just stays in the clitoral area, kind of circling it if that makes any sense. Sometimes it seems to come more often right after my period but sometimes it seems completely random. The intensity changes as well - there are times when it is extremely painful but sometimes it is just fairly minor itching sensations. I rarely have any abnormal discharge, if ever. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Do you know what my problem might be? What can I do to minimize or prevent these problems?
