Is it abuse?From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 25 Oct 2001 16:10:42 -0500 (CDT)
Hello, I see a lot of discussion on this forum regarding sexual abuse and assault and sexual activity. I don't want this to sound dumb, but what EXACTLY constitutes "sexual abuse or assault" and what is the difference? The reason I'm asking these questions is because when I have been asked by my physician if I have been, I don't know how to respond and don't want to open a "can of worms" unneccesarily. Here's the situation: when I was 2, I was "touched" by a neighbor boy and it was confirmed by my pediatrician at the time that there was some sort of an assault. Then, when I was nine, my brother attempted penetration (I really can't tell you if he was successful or not, as I don't remember). Is it abuse if it was just once and my another child...they were both older than me, but neither of them were adults? So, when a doctor asks the last time I was sexually active, I say "never"...is this considered to be true? How would my pediatrician have been able to see if there was an "assault"? One last question, does this put me at an increased risk for STD's? Thank you so much for your answers!
