ankles swelling

I am 27 years old and for about the past four to five months I have noticed that my ankles are almost always slightly swollen and puffy at the end of the day (I am not pregnant although I did suffer a miscarriage five months ago). I have an office job so I do not spend my days on my feet. They become alot more swollen when I spend a great deal of time walking or hiking. I am a smoker and worry that could be the cause. I have also noticed that my feet fall asleep alot more often than they used to and that I get that pins and needles feeling frequently. My doctor noticed the swelling at a visit I had two months ago and I mentioned that I had noticed it but my doctor did not seem concerned. I am very puzzled by this since they never used to swell - any idea what is going on and should I be concerned?

Thank you, Christie
