I just read replies from Drs. Hill and Von Almen that OCP have way more estrogen than HRT. Now this confuses me. In the workup of DUB/meno,metro/adenomyosis/perimenopausal, birth control pills were prescribed, first to stop bleeding, than to try and regulate things (MPA made me the wicked witch of the west). (I have tubal ligation so never used OCP.) I am 50 and obese. At the same time as all this presented itself, my lower legs ballooned to a +2, +3 edema. The explanation was "probably hyperestrogenic state." A side effect of the pill gyn prescribed (Levlen) was, within 36 hours, no edema, heightened "aliveness", sense of well-being and return of libido (wicked sex dreams the first night I took the pill - husband says "Thank you Dr....). When I go off the pill to bleed, the edema is back 12 hours after the first missed pill and I blow up until I start the pill again. So if there is more estrogen than in HRT and I'm already hyperestrogenic, how is this working? And secondly, I will be having TAH with both overies bye- bye in fall - can the levlen be used for hrt even though I will no longer have a uterus - I can't begin to say how much better that teeny tiny pill makes me feel (and I was against taking it to begin with!) I will have to do something, I'm already osteopenic. Thank you
