estrogen producing ovarian tumorFrom: A (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 8 Jul 2001 01:01:29 -0400
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of tumors on the ovary that produce estrogen? A good friend of mine is 46 years old- has never had children & has had fibroids for a number of years. She's stopped menstruating (for the past 8 months) & assumed she was in menopause. However, her doctor tells her she has a tumor on her ovary (appear not to be fluid filled in the ultrasound) that's putting out a lot of estrogen & her uterus is enlarged (about the size of 3-4 months pregnant & she's not (she's not pregnant...that has been eliminated). She was given a large dose of progesterone to bring on her period but nothing happened. She will undergo a biopsy(although due to the health care system here it may be a considerable wait). . Naturally she is very worried about the possibly of ovarian cancer. Her family practitioner is attempting to get a referral to a specialist- who is more experienced in these types of situations- a gynecologist or oncologist? Any comments would be appreciated...
