Docs - I have been misdiagnosed with PCOS, how did this happen? From: Anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 6 Jul 2001 20:22:30 -0500 (CDT)
Sudden weight gain, fatigue, migraines, no periods, stretch marks all over my body. Endocrinologist ran 24 hr urine cortisol test. Negative. Hormonal tests - LH:FSH greater than 2:1 ratio. Testosterone is elevated. I started 2000mg Glucophage. I've always had normal periods, except lately. There is no PCOS history in my family. At my 3 months checkup, I've only lost 5 pounds, and that's from another medication. I'm low carbing, working out 4+ days a week. The stretch marks have grown. I've developed severe mood swings, depression to rage. Another 24 hr urine screen (negative). My LH:FSH is the same, my total testosterone is actually higher. But my doc is convinced something is wrong because of the growing stretch marks. I found Quest Diagnostics in Denver has been grossly mishandling my labs. My 24-hr urine test didn't have any preservatives in it, and one sample sat in the docs office for 3 days. I have serious doubts that they are keeping it consistantly cold. I'm paying for a hospital lab to redo the test, with 10mg boric acid in the container , stored on dry ice and FedEx to Mayo clinc for the actual test. $91. My doc was shocked when I told her how Quest was handling my labs. From now on, all my stuff will be done at the University of Colorado Hospital lab. It's about 99% certainty that I have Cushings. I'm having a CT of my adrenals next week. I have a known pit tumor. How many other women misdiagnosed with PCOS? How many doctors are aware of the quality control in the labs? If I didn't have the stretch marks, what would have happened to me? Docs, would you have told me PCOS? I don't blame my doctor, PCOS was the logical choice.
