heartbeat detected but no growth

I'm currently 8.5-9 weeks pregnant (since LMP). A sonogram 12 days ago revealed an embryo but no heartbeat...hcG levels have been increasing properly; the level when the first sonogram was taken was over 12,000 although progesterone continued to be minimal/borderline at 10.5 (is being treated with supplemental progesterone suppositories)

A followup sonogram 11 days later revealed a heartbeat, but showed absolutely no growth in the size of the embryo, which registered the exact same measurement: 6.1 weeks, that it had the previous time. The sonogram was performed in the doctor's office, using a low-resolution transv. ultrasound device.

A second followup sonogram has been scheduled for next week. I thought that the presence of a heartbeat was a reassuring sign, but my doctor is extremely pessimistic about this pregnancy, given lack of growth and low progesterone.

Is it possible that fluctuations in embryonic growth rate, combined with the 3-to-5-day margin of error for the ultrasound device may have resulted in the findings, and that the embryo is still alive and well?

Have there been cases where embryos have failed to show measurable growth on a low resolution ultrasound within a two week time frame, but have thrived? Any answers would be most appreciated.

Many thanks, Susan
