Cervical dysplasia, also konwn as CIN or SIL is usually caused by HPV but not always. the other reasons are not clear at this point. Some feel the HPV jsut hasn't been diagnosed yet. Although I've heard of it, I've yet to see dysplasia in a virginal patient or one who uses condoms 100% of the time so I presume there is some sexual contact reason for dysplasia even if the HPV is negative. To be sure, when HPV is negative, other STDs should be checked for as you so correctly pointed out. Hope this helps and write back anytime for more information. HSM
