I have a question regarding the relationship between PID and dysmenorrhea. I have read in numerous texts that dysmenorrhea can be caused by PID. But do they mean a current inflammation of PID? Or do they mean a woman who has HAD PID? I'm confused! Also, what's the difference between chronic and acute PID? A brief history: I was diagnosed with PID at age 17. Hospitalized for a couple of weeks. Had IV antibiotics, a couple different kinds (don't remember which they were), and also had a laparoscopy. They determined PID had spread to liver (?). I had a second case of PID about a year and a half later. Also hospitalized. Intense pain thereafter. My OBGYN let me know that a radical hysterectomy would be my only solution (at age nineteen, that was NOT an option!). I have not had an inflammation in eleven years (knock on wood). However, I have intense menstrual cramps. I've been on the pill for the past six years, and had severe cramps and pms starting a week before my period (yes, even ON the pill my cramps were unbearable). I'm off the pill, and pms is MUCH more tolerable, but the pain is excruciating still (only about five days prior, but now it's lasting two days into my period as well). Dysmenorrhea runs in my family (paternal grandmother and cousins had/have to be in bed for one week). Is past PID a potential cause for current Dysmenorrhea? Sorry my questions soooo long! And advice/help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Dominique
