While there have been some cahnges in the way the pap smear is prepared, the actual collecting of teh smears from the cervix hasn't changed -- still requires a speculum. YOur husband may have heard about HPV testing which does not require a speculum exam (but which also does not provide all the information a pap does) or still experimental collection of vaginal washings, but as for now, getting a pap is pretty much the same as it has been for years.
