Age 31 - 1st pregnancy - tons of itching = LIVER DISEASEFrom: Fetty (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 30 Mar 2001 17:34:05 -0600 (CST)
Hello ladies, I was pregnant for 3 mos. before I was diagnosed with PUPPs (Pruritic papules of pregnancy) - extreme itching all over my body. I used tons of anti-itch cremes + prednisone towards the end of my 8th month. My OBGYN told me that the itching would go away after the baby was born. My son was born in Jan.2000 and I am still itching. I have seen a numerous amount of dermatologists for my itching symptoms and felt that it must be something else. In Dec.2000, I went to a doctor who specializes in INTERNAL MEDICINE and found that my liver enzymes were totally elevated and the doctor referred me to a liver specialist. Since then, I have had a liver biopsy, an ERCP(where they stick a tube down my throat with little camera's into my bile ducts, pancreas, gall bladder, etc... I am 31 years old and in excellent health and shape, and it shocked me when after both of these tests, that I may have Autoimmune hepatitis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, or Primary Sclerosing Choleangitis...all resulting in scarring of the liver and eventually sometime in my lifetime will have to have a Liver transplant!! I am currently seeking second and third opinions at Stanford and waiting to be diagnosed properly. This email is intended to shed some light on itching caused by pregnancies. However, PBC,PSC and Autoimmune Hepatitis have NO CAUSES, therefore stem from your own body fighting the liver. I advise all women to investigate all aspects with other types of doctors regarding the severity of what your situation may be. Sincerely, FM
