Wifes first visit to OBGYN

I’m hopping some of you out there will be able to help me. My wife and I have been married for one year, she is 23, and has never been to the OBGYN. She has finally made an appointment with a female Dr. and has asked me to take her. I figured she wanted me to go and wait for her. Well I was wrong she has asked me to go into the room with her. I must admit this makes me nervous but I will do anything for her. A friend told her to go to http://www.gyn101.com to see what to expect.

I have several questions:

Is it normal for a significant other to go into the room when the patient is not pregnant? Will they even let me stay in the room? None of my friends have ever said they went with their wives when they weren’t pregnant but then again I doubt they would say anything and I definitely can not ask.

She has been talking to some of her friends about what to expect and one of them said that she will get a gown for the beginning part of the exam but that they remove it once the exam starts leaving her fully undressed. I think this is what she is scared of most and I must admit it the thought makes me very uncomfortable. Something doesn’t sound right about this.

If they do let me in what can I do to make her feel more comfortable? At the same time what can I do to calm my nerves? If anyone has had their significant other go with them what can I expect? Where will they have me sit/stand.

Please help my wife and I.

Thanks, Mike
