HPV often does not show up on paps. Warts are usually diagnosed by appearance. If there's doubt, sometimes a biopsy will confirm the diagnosis. Abnormal Paps can be caused by HPV. Many women with HPV and warts have normal Paps throughout their lives, though. No commercial test is currently available to prove that a person is free from HPV. Many of us are probably infected without knowing. There's more great information available about HPV on http://www.ashastd.org. Please write again if you have more questions.
