Tammy, A colposcopy involves looking at the cervix closely with the aid of a form of microscope-it looks kinda like a pair of binoculars. For the woman, the position and instrumentation utilized is like that when one has a pap smear. The physician is looking for area that appears abnormal under magnification and if there are focal areas, he/she may take small samples of these abnormal areas. Occasionally, there is a small amount of cramping associated with these biopsies. With regard to the pregnancy, any sampling done during this time avoids going up into the cervix itself. Therefore, The area being examined and possibly biopsied is approximately 4cm away from the pregnancy and as such very unlikely to cause any probs with the pregnancy. The worst thing to do is have a lot of anxiety before the procedure cause it is usually not a big deal... Lynn
