3 home tests say PREGNANT, doctor pee test sais NOT- explanation? From: deedee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 29 Nov 2000 20:07:38 -0600 (CST)
i am confused. i went to see the doctor today to confirm whether or not Im pregnant. Several weeks ago (way too early!) i took a couple of home pregnancy tests (1 of a brand called "First Response", the other was a brand called "EPT") and both were negative. But, last Tuesday, I took the First Response test, which claims to work "up to 4 days before your period is due", and it was positive. Then on Sunday, I wanted to be sure with the other brand (my home kits came with a bunch of free tests in the box) so I took the EPT test and it too said I was positive. So, this morning, I go into the doctor and they had me pee in a cup for a third test, and the doctor said it was completely negative (implying not just slightly negative, but totally negative-is there a difference???). When i told her about the 2 home pregnancy tests, she said that she suspects I *was* pregnant but that it wasnt viable and that therefore Im not pregnant anymore and that my body should soon "figure out" that it needs to expell whatever is left behind (miscarry) and I should go through bleeding etc. soon. They took a blood sample too and Im still waiting to hear back on that too. This evening, after I got home, I tried the last EPT home kit test to see if it too would say Im not pregnant anymore. But it was positive! (?!?!) My question: what is the different between the tests performed at home and those at the doctors office? Do they test for different things? I did have a lot to drink this morning and had peed quite a bit before I went in to see the doctor (I didnt get the usual 45 minute wait I was expecting in the waiting room...) Could I have screwed up the test by diluting it too much this morning? Or is the home test much more sensitive than the one at the doctors and it may jjst be showing residual stuff?
