Mirena IUD: Can US Patients Obtain It Now?From: Sponge (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Aug 2000 19:30:42 -0500 (CDT)
I am a 43 y.o. woman, obese, mild hypertension, 1 live birth, finished with child-bearing, history of depression and heavy, painful periods. My husband is not interested in a vasectomy. I am not interested in tubal ligation. We are both fed up with using condoms. I can't use pills or Depo because of the risk of depression and further weight gain. I fear the Copper IUD because of the heavy, painful periods. I would like to find a convenient form of birth control that doesn't conflict with my illnesses. My research on the internet has lead me to believe that the Mirena IUD (or IUS) is ideal for me. It may even give me some relief from my menstrual problems (a big bonus in my book). I understand that FDA approval is pending, and may come through in a year or two. I also understand that the FDA allows individuals to import non-approved medications for personal use. Does anyone here know of a way for me to obtain a Mirena IUD (perhaps from a sympathetic UK pharmacy?) and find a local GYN to insert it for me? In the meantime, I encourage all those of you who are pining for the old Today sponge (which may return to the US market someday) to check out the offerings at http://www.birthcontrol.com. There is a Canadian sponge, and it is OK to import into the US.
